What is it?
An art classroom on wheels that is designed to seat 31 students which will visit all three elementary schools.
Who will benefit?
Every elementary student on Mercer Island – over 1,800+ kids!
Who will teach the students?
A certified elementary art teacher who will be hired by the three elementary principals.
Why do we need the Art Bus?
Because visual art is more important than ever for 21 Century learning!
Why can’t we teach our kids art in the classroom?
Because our schools are overcrowded and standard classroom spaces don’t work for projects that get messy or need to be stored and completed later.
Where did the idea come from?
When the school bus levy was passed last spring, Megan Hand (a Lakeridge parent) approached Dr. Plano with the idea of taking one of our buses and transforming it into a classroom. And, he liked it!
What will it look like?
A district school bus (slated for removal from the fleet) will be retrofitted to include student work desks for 31 students, storage units for art supplies, multimedia projection systems, and additional lighting.
So what is so special about this idea?
What are people saying about the Art Bus?
“We chose Megan‟s Art Bus as a winner of the Bayer “Make Your Mark” contest because it embodies so much of what we stand for: creativity, resourcefulness, and involvement in your local community. We hope she rocks it!” ~ Daily Candy
“Megan‟s Art Bus is not only an innovative and „green‟ idea, but it allows children to express a different type of creativity, through hands-on learning. This will surely have a long-term and beneficial impact on the children of Mercer Island.” ~ Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide.
How can I help make the Art Bus happen?
By becoming a charter sponsor or by pledging to purchase something on the bus or by donating on any level. See our ArtBus Display at Fine Art Showcase on March 27 and 28 at MIHS to contribute and help make this a reality!
Right now every dollar donated will be matched (up to $60,000) by The Fine Arts Advisory Committee from a gift that was received from an anonymous donor.
